My grandfather was born in Damour, Lebanon. As a five-year-old, in 1897, he and his family moved to New York City. They brought the family za’atar with them and that family recipe has been part of every subsequent generation. Visits to Grandpa’s included breakfast with Syrian bread (pita), lebne (tart thick yogurt), and za’atar. It now falls to me to make za’atar for all my relatives and many of their friends. Today za’atar is found at every trendy restaurant and even in fancy cocktails. There are lots of different za’atars and ours is authentic and delicious.
